For the past decade, SpaceX has held an effective monopoly on rapid rocket reusability, revolutionizing the economics of spaceflight with its 
Falcon 9. 
However, a new chapter in the space race is being written. Major aerospace players in Japan and China have recently achieved critical milestones, successfully testing and landing their own reusable rocket prototypes. These breakthroughs signal the end of the Western era of reusability and ignite a fierce, multi-polar competition to drive launch costs down.
Here is a look at the key developments from Japan and China that are reshaping the industry.
  Japan’s Iterative Leap: The PST Prototype
Japan has a long and respected history in space exploration, but its launch sector has been dominated by the highly reliable, yet expendable, H-IIA and the new H3 rockets. To remain competitive, Japan is aggressively pivoting toward reusability.
The most visible recent success comes from Prolong Space Technology (PST), an innovative Japanese private aerospace company.
The Milestone: PST has successfully conducted tethered flight tests of its vertical-takeoff, vertical-landing (VTVL) prototype. While these hops are low-altitude, they are crucial for validating the complex guidance, navigation, and control systems required for pinpoint landings.
The Significance: The PST prototype on the launch stand, with a scale-providing technician nearby, highlights the tangible nature of their progress. The vehicle utilizes a metallic, stainless-steel design philosophy similar to SpaceX’s early Grasshopper program, opting for an iterative development process. By testing early and often, PST aims to rapidly accelerate its learning curve.
The Japanese government, through JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency), is also funding its own parallel research into reusable systems, including a larger test vehicle known as the RV-X, ensuring a dual-track approach to achieving national reusability.

 China’s Rapid Rise: State and Commercial Synergy
While Japan is taking an iterative, measured approach, China is moving with characteristic speed and scale, driven by a combination of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and a burgeoning commercial space sector. China now performs the second-highest number of orbital launches globally per year, and reusability is the next major strategic goal.
The Milestone: Perhaps the most dramatic recent demonstration came from a commercial entity. a Chinese reusable rocket prototype executed a precise, propulsive vertical descent back to Earth after an orbital launch.
 Instead of landing legs, a specialized offshore vessel utilizes an elevated steel-cable net structure.
  The rocket's grid fin area engages with the net-capture mechanism to safely absorb its kinetic energy.
  This innovative approach removes heavy landing legs to reduce structural weight and maximize payload efficiency.
    Another critical breakthrough in 2024 came from the state-owned CAS Space, which successfully conducted a vertical takeoff and vertical landing test for a new rocket stage.
