​The Fall of NASA's Swift Observatory

​The Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, a space telescope that has studied cosmic gamma-ray bursts and explosions since 2004, is running out of time. Due to its rapidly decaying orbit, the spacecraft is falling back to Earth and is expected to reenter the atmosphere and burn up entirely later this year (likely in October).

  The Failed Rescue Mission
​To save the telescope, NASA and Katalyst Space launched an experimental commercial robotic repair vehicle named LINK on July 3, 2026. LINK was designed to rendezvous with Swift and boost it into a higher orbit.
​Unfortunately, the rescue mission failed:
​About three weeks into the flight, two of LINK's three reaction wheels malfunctioned.
​The failure caused an uncontrolled spin and intermittent communication issues.
​Katalyst and NASA announced that LINK cannot capture or boost Swift.
​Despite the mission's primary failure, the teams will continue proximity operations with Swift to gather valuable data for future satellite-servicing missions.

​Amateur astronomers, such as the Sociedad de Astronomía del Caribe in Puerto Rico, have successfully captured video of both spacecraft passing near bright stars like Antares.

​Use Star Charts: View interactive trajectory maps to locate the spacecraft against background constellations.
​Swift's Scientific Legacy
​Swift has relied on three key instruments to monitor the universe:
​Burst Alert Telescope (BAT): A wide-field gamma-ray detector that continuously watches for sudden high-energy flashes.
​X-Ray Telescope (XRT): Measures and tracks the fading X-ray afterglows of detected bursts.
