In 2018, Japan’s Hayabusa2 mission achieved a remarkable feat on the asteroid Ryugu. Because the asteroid's gravity is so weak, traditional wheeled rovers would have been useless, so engineers designed small, cookie-tin-sized rovers that moved by hopping. Using an internal spinning motor to generate torque, these robots could leap up to 15 meters and remain airborne for 15 minutes at a time, bouncing across the alien landscape to capture unprecedented photographs.

However, the mission's scope went far beyond photography. Hayabusa2 successfully blasted a crater into the surface, collected material from the debris, and returned it to Earth in 2020. Inside this sample, scientists discovered ancient organic molecules and amino acids—the fundamental ingredients of life. This discovery suggests that billions of years ago, asteroids like Ryugu may have seeded our young planet with the building blocks necessary for existence, making these small, hopping robots key to understanding our own origins.
